Copyright is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the exclusive right to make copies of a creative work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a literary, artistic, educational, or musical form. Copyright is intended to protect the original expression of an idea in the form of a creative work, but not the idea itself.




1976 Copyright Act - extended federal copyright protection to all works, both published and unpublished, once they are fixed in a tangible form.


**Fair use under US copyright law. Section 107. fair use - identifies certain types of uses—such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research—as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use.

1998 DMCA - Digital Millennium Copyright Act 1998 (keyword dissemination) -  It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures that control access to copyrighted works.


**dissemination: the action or fact of spreading something, especially information, widely.


**Safe harbour: protects sites that allow users to upload and share content with others, but site must comply with DMCA notice and take down procedure

*is a “content creators” work considered copyright material… radio and television broadcasts are eligible, why not creators?
