Wonderful Counselor
He Will Be Called
December 8, 2019
We’ve rounded the corner into December; and as we all know, Christmas will be here... and gone... in a flash. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle with gifts to buy, stockings to stuff, parties to attend, lights to see, presents to wrap, and cookies to bake -- and forget why we celebrate the day in the first place.

This weekend at Dayspring, we’re starting a new series on four of the names for Jesus we find in scripture. My name Christopher means “Christ bearer” or “follower of Christ.” Seems appropriate, even if my parents didn’t intend it that way when they gave it to me! But it’s a far cry better than what my dad wanted to name me before they decided on that.

The name Mary means “beloved;” Joseph means “May Jehovah add increase or bring blessing.” The name translated Jesus or Yeshua in Hebrew means “To deliver, to rescue.” In Isaiah 9, verse 6, one of the most well-known Christmas-related verses outside of the actual Christmas story, we read: For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. These prophetic names give us a small glimpse at the character of the promised Messiah, the one who came to deliver -- to rescue us from the power of sin and death.

This week, we’ll be taking a look at the name Wonderful Counselor and what it means for us to have a Savior who knows our deepest pain and who brings healing to the sickness of our hearts.
