2019 In the Rearview Mirror
December 29, 2019
Making an annual list of New Year's resolutions is an old tradition. By some accounts, it dates back to the ancient Romans, who customarily made a show of promising their mythological god Janus that they would behave better over the next 12 months than they had in the past 12.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that six months into the year, fewer than half -- 46 percent -- of resolvers were still keeping to their pledges. The fact is that only about 10% of people who make New Year’s resolutions successfully implement lasting change.

So, what about you? Are you a resolution maker? A goal setter? A word-for-the-year chooser? Or do you just avoid all that new beginnings, clean slate stuff altogether?

Whatever your take is on resolutions, for most of us, the beginning of a new year is a time for reflection; for taking a look back at what has been over the last 12 months and anticipating what lies ahead in the year to come. It can be a healthy and productive exercise if we approach it with a growth mindset; purposefully looking at where we’ve been, applying the lessons there are to learn, and taking the next steps in our journey.

I’m Chris Voigt, Lead Pastor at Dayspring Fellowship in Keizer. This weekend at Dayspring, we’ll be taking a look back at our journey with God over the last year. We’ll revisit the studies we’ve done the last 12 months and take one more look at the lessons that God wants us to learn before we move into all that He has in store for us in 2020. We’ve been on an incredible journey together as a church. I’m looking forward to reflecting together, recounting God’s faithfulness to us, and anticipating what God is going to do in us in the year ahead.
