For the next ten weeks, Rock Star Principles creator Dayna Steele is excited to introduce you to her new project…

THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR is a new play based on Texas Radio Hall of Famer and entrepreneur Dayna Steele’s 2016 book, Surviving Alzheimer’s With Friends, Facebook and a Really Big Glass of Wine. In this best-selling caregiver’s memoir, Steele candidly chronicled her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s on Facebook with unfiltered observations and dark humor.

The Woman in the Mirror, a dark comedy, will premiere at MATCH in Houston, Texas November 4-14 with a limited run of 12 performances.

With the 2020 COVID lockdown, the live play was postponed and was instead performed as a 10-episode series of table reads with the director, creator, and an actor. Each series ended with Dayna interviewing an expert about some facet of dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia. Leading up to opening night, you will be able to listen to those table reads here.

These podcast episodes, the table read series, and the live performances are written by caregivers and performed for caregivers and those who love them with love, laughter, and wine. Lots of wine.

There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.

- Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

IN THIS EPISODE…

As a caregiver, we often feel consumed by our emotions. Especially guilt. We regularly make tough calls and hard decisions in the best interest of our loved one, but it can often feel like we’re taking everything away from them - as if we’re punishing them for their actions and behaviors, even when we know it’s beyond their control.

“You become consumed with the guilt. I had taken her home away. I had taken her car away. I had taken her dog away and I had taken her phone away. I HAD TAKEN EVERYTHING AWAY FROM MY MOTHER.”

The expert interview following this episode features media blogger Mike McGuff who lost his mom to early-onset Alzheimer’s. He now serves as an Alzheimer’s Ambassador in the congressional district in Houston, Texas, working tirelessly as an advocate for more care, more research, and a cure for Alzheimer’s. Mike shares some of the latest information about Alzheimer’s that he is currently delivering to government officials and explains how he’s working to push new legislation to help younger individuals that are diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He also shares how his mother’s diagnosis impacted his life and the decisions he’s made as an adult, his thoughts on the blood test that screens for Alzheimer’s, and how becoming an Alzheimer’s advocate has helped him improve his mental health.

“It doesn’t matter if you visit every day or once a month - it’s all the same to someone in Memory Care. So I have to remind myself that I have her in a place that’s taking care of her. That’s what I’m paying for - peace of mind.” - Dayna Steele
