Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

Today is Sunday, Feb. 11

Enrollment soars at Marshall’s Bill Noe Flight School. A new mobile ID program will soon allow you to store your WV driver’s license on your smartphone. And Vantage Ventures doubles its tech startups--#YesWV…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – Marshall University is ahead of schedule on its progress with the Bill Noe Flight School.

Marshall University President Brad Smith says that after just two years, the program is already beating their 5-year projections.

“Our enrollment right now is 148% above our plan so we’re a complete year ahead of our 5-year plan,” Smith said.

The Bill Noe Flight School has 10 planes with their first helicopter coming in. The school is on track to see over 1,000 students participate in the program over the next couple of years with more aircraft on the way.

Smith said the aviation industry is about 50,000 people short for all sorts of jobs including pilots, technicians and air traffic control. There’s not enough individuals in the pipeline to fill all the needed positions, but Marshall, with its growing aviation program, is trying to help the cause.

“Every student we have enrolled at Marshall in the aviation program has a guaranteed job waiting for them,” Smith said.

#2 – From MOBILE ID WORLD – The government of West Virginia has announced that it is working on a mobile ID that is expected to launch in the spring of this year. The West Virginia Mobile ID will comprise a digital driver’s license and ID card stored on the end user’s smartphone.

In revealing the mobile ID effort, the governor’s office also announced the immediate launch of a digital vehicle registration card, a move that will eliminate “the need to rummage through glove compartments or worry about misplaced cards.” The digital card is designed to be stored in the user’s mobile wallet, and is compatible with iOS and Android.

As for the planned mobile ID, DMV Commissioner Everett Frazier described it as “a game-changer,” adding, “It’s secure, convenient and puts the power of your ID right at your fingertips.”

#3 – From WV NEWS – Morgantown-based Vantage Ventures began operating in 2019 with the hopes of propelling homegrown technology start-ups, and in the past year and a half alone, the organization has more than doubled its roster.

The organization has sought out start-ups to engage them with a co-working space, offer the new business both pragmatic and financial support and surround the start-ups with a community of other business owners for networking and peer support, according to Vantage Ventures Executive Director Sarah Biller.

In July 2022, Vantage Ventures — located in West Virginia University’s John Chambers College of Business and Economics — had 29 start-ups under its wing. However, over the last 18 months, the organization has made great strides in expanding, now partnering with more than 60 technology start-ups.

“It’s not because of us,” Biller said. “There were already entrepreneurs in West Virginia who needed a community and a place that supported them. We don’t often think of West Virginia as the epicenter of technology and innovation, but I can tell you firsthand that I’ve been in a lot of sophisticated ecosystems like Boston and San Francisco. Now, back home in West Virginia, with the entrepreneurs that we see and work with, I would put them against any entrepreneur in any of those ecosystems.”
