Lessons of the Geese from Jamy Bechler (The Leadership Playbook https://amzn.to/3kf90QI)

When you’re looking at having the best team possible and being the best teammate you can be, then it might help to consider some lessons geese can teach you.

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird behind it. By flying in a V-formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range than if each bird flew along

· Teammates who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier when they are bringing each other along and using each other’s momentum and sharing energy.

When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation to follow it down. They attempt to stay with the goose for protection until it can fly again or it dies.

· Stick by one another and build each other up.

· Help each other because you can do more together than you can alone. We are vulnerable by ourselves.

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.

· Don’t try to go it alone, it’s easier with teammates

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.

· We can all be leaders at some point.

· We can all take our turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership.

The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

· Our honking from behind needs to be encouraging and not something that is less than helpful

Begin by leading yourself.
