Today, we’re joined by the one and only Rep. Thomas Massie, who now sits on the Rules Committee. He shares the details of Kevin McCarthy’s proposal to raise the debt ceiling and notes that McCarthy now has a bigger problem with the RINO caucus than with conservatives. The RINOs are threatening to join with the Democrats to force a vote on a straight debt limit increase without any reforms. Massie has proposed a plan that is pragmatic in that it will achieve our goals of defanging weaponized government, but in a way that doesn’t scare the RINOs. He proposes that we use the debt limit not to secure any major reforms but to set up the budget fight on the appropriation bills, whereby we could pass bills that defund government programs that harm us. The plan would include an agreement that if we fail to pass a budget by September 30, all of government still operates, but with a 2% cut. This will force Democrats to negotiate on our issues while feeling the pain of across-the-board cuts without the risk of a full government shutdown.
