What was the genesis of this idea? What sparked the connection between genetics & Commander?

I was thinking about what my next deck would be and started to notice a trend that most of my decks are very dependent on the commander. I started to look at some of the more powerful decks and realized that they tend to be more of the utility/force multiplier variant
The genetics link is loose at best. Archetype is used so much in EDH and magic in general, that I wanted to convey meaning without overloading that word

 

Why break down these categories in this manner?  How do you see this as a worthwhile framing device for looking at commanders & deck types?

Personally the more we can break down our decks, I think it assists in framing how we talk about them. The classic example is power level. Everybody’s deck is a “75%” deck. I think this is a more objective approach to framing how your deck is built, by asking the simple question of how your commander relates to your deck.

“The commander is the piece of tech that makes the deck work.”

Force Multiplier

“A force multiplier commander will amplify a deck’s strategy, but is not required for the deck to succeed.”

 

Utility

“A utility commander is one that has no inherent strategy, but simply provides value to the deck.”

 

Technology
