What will be the impact of the gas crisis?

With many smaller energy companies already folding due to the steep rise in the cost of gas, how long will it be before the bigger ones turn to the government to help them cover the shortfall? And just how long will this crisis last? Will it have a sizeable effect on the British public? Or will continuously rising wages help soften the blow?
