Clare County Council has unanimously backed a resolution calling for tougher sentences for perpetrators of gender-based assaults. It's after 22 Year-Old Ardnacrusha based soldier Cathal Crotty received a fully-suspended sentence for an unprovoked attack on Limerick woman Natasha O'Brien in 2022, which left her unconscious. Crotty's sentence is now being appealed by the DPP for undue leniency and the convicted criminal is set to be discharged from the Defence Forces on Thursday. Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard believes given the circumstances, the punishment did not act as a deterrent to the crime.
