Welcome back to Cinema Joes! With Director Richard Linklater flashing back to the 1960's Apollo Space Program for his latest Netflix film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood earlier this month, we decided to flashback to a film near and dear to our own coming of age story, 2014’s Boyhood, starring Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, & Ethan Hawke. To help us take a look at the film, which took over a decade to make (spanning almost our entire collective childhood), is special guest and resident Coming-of-Age Film Expert Jeremy Lesser, last heard on our 2017 review of Lady Bird.

During this discussion we reflect on the innovative and historic nature of the discussion; the film’s insights into growing up, family, and the human condition; Linklater's evolving approach to the narrative, both thematically and aesthetically; and the ways in which the film comments on and touches elements of our own childhood. We also consider how different some of the aspects of the film play now, when we are nearly a decade older in our own lives.
