EXTENDED EPISODE: On this Extra Reel, we take a look back at George Lucas' directorial debut and the director's view of science fiction before Star Wars. To explore this dystopian nightmare is Anthony, a local cinephile and avid A24 connoisseur. In this film, it is a bleak outlook on not only the future, but also the reflection of America's problematic response to the threat of Communism within it's own citizens. Join us as we look through the window into a truly alien civilization with THX 1138 from 1971.

In the distant future and in a different world, humanity lives in a megastructure far below the surface of the planet. Freedom is restricted by means of mandatory medication that control emotions. But when THX 1138 (Robert Duvall) and LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie) stop taking their state-sponsored medication, they wake up to the horror of their existence and also fall in love with each other. With love being outlawed, THX and LUH begin their escape from their world into the unknown.
