STORY 1: 21-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Cherokee County Crash

William Bedora, a Woodstock man, faces charges of vehicular homicide and DUI following a November crash. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office arrested Bedora on December 22, charging him with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, and weaving over the roadway. The arrest warrant states that Bedora, driving over 116 mph under the influence, crashed into a mailbox and fence, resulting in the death of his passenger, Robert Zander Hattersley, 21. Bedora, released on a $24,000 bond, is prohibited from driving and contacting Hattersley’s family under bond conditions.

STORY 2: Braves Sign Newly Acquired Sale to Two-Year Extension

The Atlanta Braves signed left-hander Chris Sale to a two-year, $38 million contract extension, restructuring his previous deal with the Boston Red Sox. The new contract covers the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with a club option for 2026 at $18 million. Sale, a seven-time All-Star, was acquired from Boston in exchange for prospect Vaughn Grissom. The 34-year-old waived his no-trade clause to join the Braves. Sale has faced injury challenges in recent years, including Tommy John surgery and stress fractures, limiting his appearances. Despite this, he remains a highly regarded pitcher with a strong track record.

STORY 3: Italian Restaurant Opens in Downtown Canton

Palermo’s Original Pasta and Sandwiches (POPS), an Italian restaurant, opened in downtown Canton, Georgia, inside the historic Jones Building. The restaurant, owned by Andy and Amber Palermo, offers a range of Italian dishes, including pasta made in-house, chicken parmesan, seafood scampi, sandwiches, salads, and more. POPS also features a small Italian market with imported items for home cooking. The Palermos, with over 20 years of restaurant experience, aim to provide a neighborhood gem and express gratitude for the community's support. POPS is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

STORY 4: Safe Kids Cherokee Providing Car Seats to Families

Safe Kids Cherokee County, led by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, has been awarded the 2024 Car Seat Mini Grant by the Georgia Department of Public Health. This grant, funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, enables Safe Kids Cherokee County to provide car seats and education to financially eligible families in the region. Since 2007, the mini grant has prevented serious injuries or deaths, saving over 425 children in Georgia involved in crashes. Car seats, when used correctly, reduce fatal injuries by 71% among infants and 54% among children aged 1 to 4 years in passenger cars.

STORY 5: Ball Ground-Based Company Pledges $75,000 in Support of COED

CAIRE Inc., a Ball Ground-based manufacturer of oxygen and cardiorespiratory diagnostics equipment, has pledged $75,000 over the next five years in support of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED). This investment is part of the COED initiative, Cherokee By Choice 2.0, aiming for $375 million in capital investment and 2,200 direct jobs for Cherokee County. CAIRE's support will be utilized for workforce development and the "Work in Cherokee" campaign, focusing on local job opportunities, data analysis on wages and benefits, and addressing skills gaps to incentivize residents to work locally. The company's contribution reinforces its commitment to the community where its primary manufacturing hub is located.

STORY 6: Cherokee County Leaders Sell Land For Potential Housing Community

Cherokee County leaders have approved the sale of approximately 0.75 acres of surplus land at Patriots Park near Acworth to Ashton Atlanta Residential LLC for $240,000. The developer intends to combine the land with four other parcels for a future housing community. The sale is contingent upon Ashton obtaining necessary permits and approvals for the development. The land was originally purchased using park bond funds, and the proceeds from the sale will be used to enhance Patriots Park.

STORY 7: Federal Judge Rejects Voter Intimidation Charges Against Conservative Group in Georgia

A federal judge in Georgia ruled in favor of the conservative group True the Vote in a lawsuit involving their challenge to over 364,000 voters' eligibility. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones declared that True the Vote's actions did not amount to illegal voter intimidation, as claimed by Fair Fight Action, founded by Democrat Stacey Abrams. True the Vote had filed challenges ahead of the 2020 runoff elections, asserting that voters appeared ineligible due to residency changes. The judge found that the challenges didn't violate the Voting Rights Act, although some aspects of True the Vote's methods were criticized. The ruling is seen as significant for eligibility challenges under federal law.

We’ll have closing comments after this.
