Sonny & The Sunsets

March 19, 2011 19:10 - 8 minutes - 41.3 MB Video

This isn’t Sonny Smith’s first trip to the rodeo. For years, many locals have loved his clever song writing and goofy stage persona. Somehow, after completing his ambitious “100 Records” project, Sonny still had the creative stamina to form his awesome new band: The Sunsets. They have been taking their sweet, sweet California-style jams around the world ever since. The songs featured today are from their new album “Hit After Hit”, and the record title could‘t be more spot on.

Ever Isles

February 18, 2011 08:36 - 12 minutes - 65.2 MB Video

In the summer of 2010, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Jeremy Robert Harris nestled into a cabin on Orcas Island and spent their time creating the debut Ever Isles record, “Cacoon”. They’ve since relocated to the bay area where they’ve been impressing audiences with their consistently oneiric performances. Were so excited to show them here with an expanded line-up that features Nick Aives and Jessi Campbell of Range Of Light Wilderness.

Sea Of Bees

January 19, 2011 21:21 - 11 minutes - 60.2 MB Video

Sea Of Bees created one of our favorite records in 2010, so we’re really proud to feature them as them as our first episode of 2011. Jules is joined here by an all star cast of musicians from the Sacramento recording scene, including guitarist John Baccigaluppi (who runs the Hangar). You’ll especially enjoy the stripped down version of “Won’t Be Long” with it’s mellow pump organ.

Magic Leaves

December 21, 2010 20:13 - 9 minutes - 51.4 MB Video

Magic Leaves had been making dreamy home recordings at a house in the Marin Headlands for years when Josh Bruner found a beat up guitar left in the basement. Lured by it’s charm, he decided not to toss it, but instead take it apart, sand the body, clean its bits and put it back together. When an accidental rewiring mistake caused the volume knob to be left out the circuit, Josh fell in love with its ratty scratchy tone. This inspired a whole new rocking sound for Magic Leaves.

Devotionals

November 21, 2010 17:25 - 12 minutes - 65.3 MB Video

Tyson Vogel may be best known as the exciting drummer in local duo Two Gallants, but the secret is getting out: he is an incredibly gifted guitar player. The Devotionals started when Tyson teamed up with Anton Patzner to entered the studio and record their self titled debut. Expanding the band for live shows allowed them to blossom to the current line-up, featuring members of Judgement Day, Honeycomb, and Passenger & Pilot.

Thao and Mirah with The Most Of All

October 23, 2010 02:36 - 11 minutes - 60.6 MB Video

This year’s Noise Pop festival featured a collaborative performance from two of our favorite artists: Thao and Mirah. That show happened to fall on a full moon, so it’s no surprise that it went over so well! Not long after, the duo decided to pull together members of their respective bands for a summer tour as Thao and Mirah with The Most Of All. What a treat it was, to host them in Studio C for their final day of rehearsal before the big tour. We edited together our favorite parts of that ma...

Birds & Batteries

September 23, 2010 18:05 - 13 minutes - 71.3 MB Video

Birds & Batteries have a special relationship with Studio C, and we were so pleased to finally host them for Chasing The Moon. Mike Sempert is an incredible arranger, and brought in an all star string quartet that includes Anton and Lewis from Judgement Day. These guys are really incredible live, don’t miss their upcoming show at Bottom of the Hill on October 15th.

Tartufi

August 24, 2010 18:05 - 27 minutes - 142 MB Video

Tartufi is a very busy band. They co-organize awesome music festivals. They teach kids how to rock. They go on national tours. Still, they somehow find time to come into our studio and perform amazing jams like this. We hope you love it as much as we do.

The California Honeydrops

June 26, 2010 19:30 - 15 minutes - 81.8 MB Video

This band is world class fresh! The California Honeydrops are the real deal: transforming any dull scene into a world class dance party. Lech Wierzynski leads a killer band that includes pianist Chris Burns, drummer Ben Malament, bass player Seth Ford-Young, and saxophonist Johnny Bones. Working on this episode was especially tough because none of us could stay seated during the editing/mixing.

Bart Davenport

June 26, 2010 07:30 - 13 minutes - 72.5 MB Video

Many of you already know how special a solo performance from Bart Davenport feels. When Bart told us he was bringing his band into the studio, we had no idea how lucky we were. Turns out - they'’re amazing! Bart already has tons of style, and with the band, he steps it up so much more while still maintaining his intimate signature sound.

Ramon & Jessica

May 27, 2010 19:30 - 16 minutes - 85.5 MB Video

We’re so excited to feature Ramon & Jessica. This power duo is comprised of two incredibly eclectic bay area natives. Ramon performs with so many great local bands it’s hard to keep straight, while the über talented Jessica can be harder to spot than a mountain lion. Fortunately these two come together quite often to create music and we were there to capture one of wonderful these occasions.

Honeycomb

April 28, 2010 19:30 - 19 minutes - 90 MB Video

Emily Ritz and Honeycomb are one of our favorite new bands in the San Francisco music scene. Miss Ritz, a self taught musician, brings a unique finger style and odd meters to her ukulele playing. In less than a year, Honeycomb has become a true collaboration, now living together in their outer mission hive. Look out for performances from several familiar Chasing The Moon alumni: including Andrew Maguire’s fierce percussion playing, and Kacey Johansing’s sweet vocals tempering Emily’s feral le...

Nice Guy Trio

March 29, 2010 19:30 - 19 minutes - 99.2 MB Video

The Nice Guy Trio is Darren Johnston on trumpet, Rob Reich on accordion, and Daniel Fabricant on bass; three of the finest improvisational ensemble players in the San Francisco area. Fusing elements of blues, calypso, country and much more, the trio play out brilliant arrangements of both original compositions and modern classics. The result: music that is simultaneously accessible, fun and beautiful, yet undoubtedly virtuosic.

Kelly McFarling

February 28, 2010 16:30 - 16 minutes - 88.7 MB Video

Although she was raised in Atlanta, Kelly McFarling seems right at home here in San Francisco. Her voice is powerful enough to fill a concert hall, but her music seems equally suited to porches and living rooms. After teaching herself to play banjo, Kelly began writing songs and formed a band with bass player Jonathan Kirchner and guitarist Jon Moldover. We hope you enjoy listening to this performance as much as we do.

Kacey Johansing

January 30, 2010 10:00 - 17 minutes - 88.7 MB Video

Kacey Johansing has had an important influence on the vision and direction of Chasing The Moon since it was barely an idea, so it's only fitting to begin our second season with her lovely music! She put together an incredible crew of musicians for this performance, including Emily Ritz improvising a dazzling light show on the overhead projector.

Lavay Smith

December 31, 2009 23:00 - 17 minutes - 86.3 MB Video

We couldn’t believe our luck when Chris Seibert first proposed the idea of bringing in Lavay Smith & her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. It’s only once in a blue moon that you get to have one of the top voices in jazz & blues come record at your studio! Lavay brought in a all star cast of bay area musicians including some serious horn players (listen to Mike Olmos’ fantastic trumpet solos). We’re excited wrap up our first season with this great band of bay area legends, and we look forward to what’...

Slow Motion Cowboys

December 01, 2009 19:30 - 13 minutes - 69.7 MB Video

When Slow Motion Cowboys began warming up this recording session, everyone on our crew paused for a moment to absorb their terrific sounds. A San Francisco native, Pete Fields is supported by Dan Massie and the ubiquitous Joe Lewis (who runs one of SF’s finer music venues: Blue Six). So ride off into the sunset with us, ever so slowly.

Steve Taylor

November 03, 2009 03:10 - 14 minutes - 76.3 MB Video

We’re so excited to feature singer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Taylor on this month’s episode. A northern California native, Steve has been living in Oakland for the past several years and has recently been popping up at all our favorite San Francisco venues. Steve is joined by Andrew Maguire on vibraphone and returning guests the Patzner brothers - Anton, Lewis and Graham.

John Vanderslice

October 04, 2009 11:01 - 10 minutes - 55.7 MB Video

John Vanderslice hardly needs an introduction. For the past ten years he’s been more influential in building the San Francisco music community than perhaps anybody else. His music is loved around the world, and his recording studio, Tiny Telephone, continues to be the spot for independent bands to record some of the best records of the past decade. We’re so honored to feature him, along with Jamie Riotto on bass, for the latest episode of Chasing The Moon.

Quinn Deveaux and the Blue Beat Review

September 05, 2009 01:01 - 18 minutes - 99 MB Video

There’s the kind of music that moves you: to stand up, drum your fingers, tap your feet, respond in some physical way to the notes being laid down. That’s what Quinn Deveaux and his band, The Blue Beat Review, have managed to create. Pay particular attention to how much life Chris Seibert breathes into our piano! You may find yourself wanting to get up and dance around the room while watching this episode, and that’s ok.

Foxtails Brigade

August 06, 2009 10:59 - 14 minutes - 74.8 MB Video

For August, we're excited to present the The Foxtails Brigade to you. Laura Weinbach and Sivan Sideh are such talented girls, and their music is so infectious. We're lucky these two decided to move to the bay area.

Judgement Day

July 07, 2009 10:01 - 19 minutes - 117 MB Video

Words can’t describe how excited we are to feature Judgement Day for this month’s episode. These guys put together a special show for us that night, including a bonus string quartet. We love bonuses, and we hope you’ll love Judgement Day. If you’ve never seen this band before, you’re in for a treat.

Michael Musika

June 08, 2009 04:01 - 11 minutes - 58.5 MB Video

Michael Musika is fascinating songwriter living here in San Francisco. He doesn't play out often enough, so we're lucky to have charmed him in to playing for our 6th episode. He's joined here by an amazing band: Indianna Hale, Sleepy Todd, Matt Adams, Dina Maccabee, and Kacey Johansing.

TaughtMe

May 09, 2009 06:01 - 14 minutes - 79.4 MB Video

Blake Henderson, of TaughtMe, is a super talented songwriter/producer. We're proud to feature him, supported here by Aubrey Trinnaman, as our fifth performer in this series.

Sonya Cotton

April 10, 2009 04:15 - 17 minutes - 85.1 MB Video

For our fourth episode of Chasing The Moon, we're featuring the lovely and talented Sonya Cotton. Sonya is joined here by her band which features Gabe Dominguez, Anna Perlmutter, Nick Stargu, and Swet.

Silian Rail

March 11, 2009 02:31 - 18 minutes - 104 MB Video

Welcome back to Chasing The Moon. For our third episode, we're presenting something a bit louder, and a bit heavier. Please turn your speakers up for Silian Rail.

Oona

February 10, 2009 02:31 - 17 minutes - 92.6 MB Video

Hello again, welcome back to the second episode of Chasing the Moon. This month we feature the amazingly talented Oona, along with her producer/drummer Dave Tweedie and Alex Doty playing guitar. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as the last, and we're already hard at work on next month's.

Indianna Hale

January 11, 2009 02:31 - 20 minutes - 96.7 MB Video

Welcome, this is the first episode of Chasing the Moon. We're so pleased to start two-thousand-nine with Indianna Hale, who came to the studio with a supporting cast that included Sleepy Todd, Matt Adams, and Thomas Edler. Our plan with this blog is to have new episodes to release in time for each full moon.
