In this episode we talk about perhaps the topic that consumes my mind more than any other: politics. I’m certainly not alone in that in 2020, nor at any point since 2016. This conversation about politics isn’t some “touch on the third rail” and tip toe around it conversation, though. It's not a baseline, basic chat about how everything is broken in the buildings 30 minutes from where I live.

This is a conversation between an engaged and informed voter, me, and someone whose job it is to get people elected, Mary Mancini.

Mary is the chairwoman of the Tennessee Democratic Party. Her professional life spans multiple roles in multiple industries, but landed in grassroots organizing before crossing over into the party side of politics.

We discuss how Democrats can be more effective communicators and ultimately close the gap between popular Democratic policies and unpopular Democratic politicians. We also discuss the challenges presented by a lack of shame in politics, specifically amongst Republicans and how a focus on the the local level can help turn the ship in the right direction.

Mary and I recorded this conversation at Z89, the student radio station we both participated in our respective times at Syracuse. Congratulations to Mary, who was deservingly inducted into the WJPZ Hall of Fame mere hours after this chat.
