The 1973 Boston Celtics set a team record for most wins, 68, had the league MVP in Dave Cowens, but failed to capture a championship. During the Eastern Conference Finals, Hall of Famer John Havlicek separated his shoulder, and the Celtics were never able to overcome the injury -- succumbing to the eventual champion New York Knicks in seven games.

The 1972-73 Celtics was Ryan’s first year on the Celtics beat for the Boston Globe, and he has called that season his favorite in history.
