Sergeant (E-5) Billy Ray Hinojos was a healthcare specialist (combat medic) with the 3RD Brigade, 3RD Infantry Division out of Fort Benning, Georgia.  SGT Hinojos did 2 combat deployments to Iraq from Jan2005-Jan2006 and Mar2007-March2008. He was assigned to numerous line units during his deployments and also served as the PSD medic for the 2/69 AR Company Commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom III.  While assigned with 2/69 AR, SGT Hinojos also worked in the Battalion Aid Station and showed his versatility and knowledge by treating over 100 casualties and patients.  SGT Hinojos's ability to perform in multiple positions was vital to accomplishing the Medical Platoon's mission during the 2 deployments to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  SGT Hinojos received his Purple Heart on 6 July 2005 when his vehicle was hit by an IED while on a convoy to TQ.  SGT Hinojos sustained a majority of his injuries from this IED explosion that included shrapnel wounds to the lower extremities and face, burns, broken ribs, dislocated left shoulder, concussion, and a traumatic brain injury.  SGT Hinojos did return to duty after he healed from these wounds and continued the mission a few months later.  SGT Hinojos was also involved in a few other IED and VBIED explosions in the following deployment, but these explosions only added to the trauma that would later be associated with TBI and PTSD.  PTSD has plagued SGT Hinojos since leaving the service as he still deals like many of us are, with the losses of our fallen brothers and is still in mourning.
