It was just 90 years ago today, July 27, 1931, when farmers in America awoke to a plague of biblical proportions. Initially starting on the 26th of July, swarms of locusts descended on crops in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, devastating a crop that was already struggling through hot temperatures and a drought. In fact, locust, unlike most decent animals, love the dry conditions, their larva thrive in dry heat, and the 1930’s in America were pretty dry.
