It was just 140 years ago today, April 28, 1881, when Henry McCarty, better known as Billy the Kid or William H. Bonney, broke out of the Lincoln County Court House in New Mexico, after having shot two Sheriff’s Deputies. On the evening of the 28th, Deputy Bob Olinger had taken some prisoners downtown to eat their dinner, leaving Deputy James Bell to guard the Kid. Allowing McCarty to relieve himself with a bathroom break was Bell’s mistake, for while climbing back up the Court House steps, Billy managed to get lose from his cuffs, beat Bell, grabbed his pistol...
