This is a story that has inspired many retellings of headless horsemen throughout the world, a spirit linked with the pagan chieftain Crom Dubh, who some believe was linked to the autumn harvest. The Dullahan is famously difficult to thwart, riding down its victims and able to pass through any door or barrier.
