Sgt. Gander, a Newfoundland dog who joined his regiment in the defense of Hong Kong at the opening stages of the First World War was nothing short of a hero. Defending his fellow troops during the battle and protecting the wounded, he gave his life to protect them. When the Battle of Hong Kong memorial was created, his fellow soldiers demanded he be placed on it as well.
