The Battle of the Somme had raged for two months before the Canadian Corps would take part. That battle was the Battle of Courcelette, and it would feature the first use of tanks in warfare, and the creeping artillery barrage.
While the Canadians would win the day, it would come at the cost of 7,000 killed or wounded soldiers.
