THE GOOD
Movie takes it's time, building the world, fleshing out the characters. We see how humanity might react to this situation IRL. FX are top-notch. Models and real explosions can never be beat.
Actors are all on point w/ great chemistry and commitment to the stakes. Script masterfully balances campy fun with emotional drama. However...
THE BAD
I'd nix Randy Quaid's subplot/family drama. Ultimately doesn't add to the story (anyone could've played the hero in the climax) and we'd be spared some rough acting made worse with bad dialogue.
THE DOWNRIGHT CAMPY
Will Smith's immortal *punch* "welcome to Earth".
Cigars.
Boomer the Dog.

.
Classic. Stands the test of time. Pulls directly from the 1950s alien invasion playbook and updates it for a TOP GUN world.
