Episode 18 // Calling Old Hollywood

My guest this week is musician and artist, Frank Lee Drennen.

Frank is a Los Angeles based songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. He is one half of the Americana/ Country/ Contemporary duo, Dead Rock West with Cindy Wasserman.

We discuss Frank’s roots in music and the arts, the early days of becoming a musician, the craft of songwriting, life as an artist, his early influences from U2 to Merle Haggard, John Denver and Chet Baker. We talk of Jazz, Blues, Country— authenticity in songwriting, in life, as well as the true blue songwriters and musicians who laid the pavement for the songwriters to walk today.

Dead Rock West released their new record May 1st via Bandcamp entitled ‘ Glitter and Gold’. I encourage everyone to buy a copy.

On a personal note — the first time I saw Dead Rock West perform before I knew Frank, was at The Roxy a few years ago opening for legendary punk band X. I was immediately drawn in by the sincerity that effortlessly flows throughout their performances and music. Needless to say it left an impact. Songs of love and life written and melodically orchestrated in a raw yet delicate way, arrived from a sincere place which is a breath of fresh air among some of today’s music.
