China-Caribbean relations, a conversation with Rasheed Griffith

In this episode, our hosts David and Parsifal talk with Rasheed Griffith about China´s engagement with the Caribbean. Rasheed is a Research Fellow at the Future Forum (Cambodia) , Director of the Caribbean-ASEAN Council (Philippines), and a George Mason University Emergent Ventures Fellow. He is also Head of Operations at Tokamak Labs, a Canadian financial technology company and the host of the China in the Caribbean podcast, a space dedicated to exploring the growing economic, political and social aspects of Sino-Caribbean relations.

During the conversation Rasheed address the diverse composition of the Caribbean and the differences and commonalities along the region. He also talks about the development of China's relationship with the Caribbean emphasizing how both blocks are now more open to  investments in the region in areas such as green energy, infrastructure, and free economic zones. Finally, Rasheed talks about U.S.-China competition for influence in the region and the importance of Taiwan.

Rasheed es Investigador asociado en el Future Forum (Cambodia), director del Caribbean-ASEAN Council (Filipinas) e investigador de mercados emergentes en la Universidad George Mason. Asimismo, es Head of Operations de Tokamak Labs, una compañía canadiense de tecnología financiera, así como el presentador del podcast China in the Carribbean, un espacio dedicado a explorar las crecientes relaciones económicas, políticas y sociales entre China y la región Caribe. 

En este capítulo, Rasheed habla acerca de la diversa composición de la región, las diferencias y similitudes respecto a los intereses de los distintos paises del Caribe y acerca del desarrollo de las relaciones con China, en donde podemos entrever mayor apertura de ambas partes a financiación por parte del gigante asiático en áreas de interés como energía verde, infraestructura y puertos libres. De igual forma, nuestro invitado hace referencia a la relación entre Estados Unidos y China y su competencia por la influencia y comercio en la región, así como la importancia de Taiwan en la relación de ambos.
