Welcome along to a new mini-series designed to help you steer your business through the uncertainty of the COVID-19 situation: Keep Your Boat Afloat: A Business Survival Guide In COVID-19 Times.

Now might not be the best time to be pushing your product with a hard-sell tactic. People are financially uncertain, and not necessarily in a position to spend on products and services that they may have been circling just a few weeks ago.

Also, by dropping prices and offering huge discounts in a knee-jerk reaction to the Coronavirus pandemic, are we alienating the customers and clients we already have?

It's a difficult balancing act, and here to discuss it is marketing expert extraordinaire, Kelly Teasdale, who tells you how you can engage at the right time, while also making sure you deliver quality and value across the board to clients both old and new.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Your marketing has to change - The first point to consider is that everything has changed. It's not enough to simply go on as we have before. It's a new world, and requires a new strategy.

There are three main types of people in the marketing world right now:

Fear is causing people to pull a lot of campaigns, on all kinds of scales.

Those who are continuing as normal and expecting it to still be effective.

Those who are ramping up efforts in a bid to use the situation as an opportunity.

Don't stop or pull away from your audience. Don't stop connecting. The worst thing you can do right now is to cease the trajectory you're on. By showing resilience now, you're going to mark yourself out as someone reliable, dependable, and able to deal with a crisis.

Review your marketing immediately - Remember that people are very sensitive at the moment. Your marketing should reflect this. It's all about appropriateness and timing.

Marketing is a relationship, which means there's input on both sides. Those who are choosing the hard-sell tactic need to remember that no-one is in the market for buying unnecessary items at the moment.

Now is a wonderful time to develop brand equity. It's a time to connect, to build your audience, engage as often as possible, and focus not on selling, but on giving whenever possible.

It's important to consider that our actions during so sensitive a moment in time may well cause irreparable damage to our brand if not carefully thought out. The very acts of caring and consideration may well be the best marketing tools we can employ right now.

Nobody should be downing tools and shutting up shop if they don't have to. We have a responsibility to keep money moving around in the economy if we can. Just remember to be sensitive and appropriate.

BEST MOMENTS

'The fact is that your marketing has to change'

'Nobody wants a business or a coach who only shows up in the good times'

‘Is this appropriate for the time that we're in?'

'Sell-sell-sell is just ridiculous'

‘Don't just add noise for noise' sake'

'Now more than ever be human in your marketing'
