KEY TAKEAWAYS

Creating flexible working in high growth businesses is hugely positive and beneficial for both the business and the people who work within it.

What are the challenges in high growth businesses?

Flexible working is very much seen in the realms of women with no consideration of any other groups needing or wanting flexible working.

There is a fear that if one person is working flexibly it would open the floodgates for everyone and that it then isn't possible to operate a business effectively day to day.

The legislation is a massive part of the problem it is extremely well-intentioned and very poorly executed.

It makes what should be a relatively simple exercise into something very complicated and it's that which creates the fear.

How can flexible working be effectively and successfully implemented?

There is a myriad of ways for people to work flexibly.

All of our team members have full flexibility to decide on their hours.

Everybody has core working hours – this is used as a guide to the number of hours we've agreed is needed to fulfil the work commitments.

We count the work not the hours, It's all about the outcomes.

Where flexible working is implemented well and is successful the end result is always fulfilled engaged motivated staff.

Where this happens, people are more likely to be flexible in return towards the company.

It has to be based on a relationship of reciprocity, mutual respect and trust.

It is key that management believes in flexible working as a strategy.

Flexible working is all about culture and in our company flexible working is there for your life, so you can have the lifestyle you want alongside positive engagement at work.
