Burst Your Bubble is a podcast that looks at racism, sexism, homophobia, and all of the other -isms and -phobias within our society through pop culture.

From music and movies to comic books and games, hatred, bigotry, and ignorance seep into our everyday lives. What is important is to dissect it and discuss it, and not just accept it as something we cannot process or change.

New episodes will be released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.

Joker: Why Make a Sympathetic Shooter?

February 13, 2020 08:21 - 35 minutes - 33 MB

EP70 - Let’s talk about toxic masculinity, gun violence, and mental illness in Joker. Because here’s the real question: in a world where we can see real life mass shootings on TV and read about them in newspapers and hear about them on the radio, why do we need a movie that celebrate and sympathizes with the shooter? Harry Potter, Representation, and Intention

January 23, 2020 08:51 - 31 minutes - 29.3 MB

EP69 - Whether you've read the books, watched the movies, both, or never have and never will, everyone knows Harry Potter. But what we like to avoid are the issues: from lack of representation and stereotypes to what JK Rowling does (and doesn't do) to make headlines today. Logo by Jeremy Ferris. ESG, Sampling, and Sexism

December 12, 2019 08:01 - 31 minutes - 29.1 MB

EP68 - Have you ever heard of ESG? They're a band made up of four sisters that blend genres, merging funk, punk, and hip hop. And whether you realize it or not you’ve probably heard their music. How? ESG’s track “UFO” is one of the most sampled songs of all time, appearing in music from Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Marilyn Manson, The Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and more. And even though “UFO” was written by a group of women, much of the time their music is put behind misogynistic lyrics ...

The One Where We Talk About Friends

November 14, 2019 08:01 - 26 minutes - 25.3 MB

EP67 - To put it simply, Friends was a phenomenon, not just influencing TV and pop culture, but American beliefs and values. Friends aired from 1994 to 2004, and while it may have been progressive for its time, now it just feels dated and problematic. But let’s take a closer look at how the show is essentially a time capsule, discussing how casual homophobia, gender stereotypes, sexism, transphobia, and racism can become a normalized part of society. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes re...

Cultures Aren't Costumes

October 31, 2019 07:01 - 22 minutes - 20.5 MB

EP66 - It happens every year - someone wears a Halloween costume that's problematic, not thinking about the historical and cultural background of that costume. But let's talk about it, and why cultures aren't costumes. Art by Jeremy Ferris. Haunted Halloween: The Exorcist and the Middle Eastern Demon

October 17, 2019 07:18 - 26 minutes - 39.9 MB

It's Halloween season so let's talk about something spooky, creepy, and disturbing, like how the 1973 horror film The Exorcist perfectly packaged anti-Arab sentiment, Islamophobia, and xenophobia to its audience. Haunted Halloween: Candyman and the Fear of "Urban Society"

October 03, 2019 07:01 - 30 minutes - 45.3 MB

It's Halloween episode time! We're going to focus on Candyman, a 1992 film that plays off a white, middle class audience's fear of "urban society": their fears of urban housing projects and the residents living there, all fueled by underlying racism and anti-miscegenation. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes are usually released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, but this October we're looking at my favorite past Halloween episodes of Burst Your Bubble. Sam Smith, the Associated Press, and They/Them

September 26, 2019 07:16 - 14 minutes - 13.8 MB

EP65 - Recently Sam Smith announced on social media that they use they/them pronouns. But when the story was picked up by the Associated Press - a news organization whose strives for "the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior" free from "inaccuracies, carelessness, bias or distortions" - they used the wrong pronouns.  Art by Jeremy Ferris. I Love Lucy: The All American Girl and "The Latin"

September 12, 2019 07:34 - 31 minutes - 29.3 MB

EP64 - I Love Lucy starred Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Arnaz was Cuban American, and so the real life married couple was the first interracial couple on television at a time when the typical TV family was suburban, middle class, and white; in the real world there were anti-miscegenation laws, immigration quotas, and xenophobia. On one hand I Love Lucy created more representation in the media, but on the other the show certainly had its problems. Art by Jeremy Fer...

The Queer Coded Villain and Sounding Gay

August 22, 2019 09:00 - 22 minutes - 20.6 MB

EP63 - Long before we saw multidimensional LGBTQ characters in pop culture, The Hays Code regulated movies. Homosexual storylines didn't meet the moral standards, and as a result queer characters would be coded into the films. But what does it mean to be queer coded, and what does it mean for stereotypes? Breakfast at Tiffany's, Yellowface, and Whitewashing

August 08, 2019 09:27 - 28 minutes - 26 MB

EP62 - Breakfast at Tiffany's may be a classic film but it's hard to ignore Mr. Yunioshi, a Japanese character played by a white man in yellowface. While discussing this adaptation of Truman Capote's 1958 novel, let's look at the history of yellowface in Hollywood, reminding ourselves that while we might not see someone doing such a blatant caricature yellowface and its racism, xenophobia, and orientalism still seeps into pop culture today - but now more covertly through whitewashing. The "Greatest" Showman?

July 25, 2019 07:01 - 26 minutes - 24.4 MB

EP61 - In The Greatest Showman P.T. Barnum is shown as a champion for outsiders who accepts and celebrates their differences and their diversity, but can the movie truly have a positive message when the very man who it makes its sympathetic hero is really a man who exploited people with disabilities and people of color to make money? From the Heart to the Rind: The Watermelon Stereotype

July 11, 2019 07:01 - 25 minutes - 23.2 MB

EP60 - There's a stereotype that all black people love watermelon, but where does this trope come from? In this episode we'll talk about how since the Civil War the black community has been negatively associated with watermelon throughout pop culture,  from minstrel shows to newspapers, music and cartoons, and paper goods to TV. And whether we realize it or not, whether we want to acknowledge it or not, the stereotype and trope remains today - because that’s American culture and American his...

Game of Thrones: Race and Dany's White Savior Complex

June 27, 2019 09:44 - 32 minutes - 30.2 MB

EP59 - Here's part two of the problems with cultural phenomenon Game of Thrones. This time we're going to talk about race, representation (or lack thereof), and Dany Targaryen's white savior complex.  Art by Jeremy Ferris. Game of Thrones is Terrible to Women

June 13, 2019 07:34 - 45 minutes - 42.2 MB

EP58 - Game of Thrones is a cultural phenomenon, but we need to talk about its problems - especially when it comes to women and how they are treated. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. www.burstyourbubblepodcast.com www.facebook.com/burstyourbubblepodcast www.twitter.com/burstbubblespod

The Orientalist History (and Future) of Aladdin

May 23, 2019 09:26 - 24 minutes - 22.5 MB

EP57 - Disney's 1992 Aladdin is a childhood classic. Growing up I know it was one of my favorites - but it's important to talk about the story from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights and how its orientalist views later influenced any and all adaptations of Aladdin (and yes, that includes Disney's). Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. www.burstyourbubblepodcast.com www.facebook.com/burstyourbubblepodcast www.twitter.com/burstbubblespod

The History of Prom

May 09, 2019 07:01 - 20 minutes - 19 MB

EP56 - Prom is something just about every American teenager goes through, but how much do people know about the history of prom, a history full of issues concerning class, race, gender, and sex. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. www.burstyourbubblepodcast.com www.facebook.com/burstyourbubblepodcast www.twitter.com/burstbubblespod

Will & Grace, The Puppy Episode, and a Missed Opportunity

April 25, 2019 09:35 - 41 minutes - 38.5 MB

EP55 - First airing in 1998 and running for 8 seasons before its 2017 reboot, Will & Grace has always been applauded as revolutionary - but the show only focused on a very narrow part of the queer community: the wealthy, white, cis man. While you could argue that this was the show’s only option at the time, Will & Grace continues to have the same problems with its current day reboot - bi-erasure, lack of racial representation, and the same stereotypes - ignoring the intersections of the quee...

Sixteen Candles and Toxic Masculinity

April 11, 2019 10:31 - 29 minutes - 27.2 MB

EP54 - Sixteen Candles is an 80s classic, but when you rewatch it it's easier to see the films problems: racism, homophobia, and - above all - that masculinity and a guy's reputation are marked by the relationships and control men have over women. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. www.burstyourbubblepodcast.com www.facebook.com/burstyourbubblepodcast www.twitter.com/burstbubblespod

Operation Switcheroo: Conspiracy Theoryology

April 04, 2019 07:01 - 1 hour - 57.3 MB

We don't have a new episode of Burst Your Bubble today (after all, new episodes are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month), but we still have a special treat for you. This year we're taking part in Operation Switcheroo, an episode swapping project organized by Moxie from the podcast Your Brain on Facts. I was lucky enough to be paired with Conspiracy Theoryology an interesting show about why conspiracy theories and alternative beliefs capture our imagination and gain popularity. Enjoy! ...

Shrill, Fatness, and 175 Pounds - the “Magic” Number

March 28, 2019 08:50 - 25 minutes - 35.9 MB

EP53 - Shrill brings up important issues, most notably how changing your life for the better doesn't have to mean changing your body. It's a show about empowerment and acceptance, and I came away with a lot of information, but also a lot of questions. My biggest concern? Well, it has to do with the morning-after pill. Dumbo

March 14, 2019 07:01 - 22 minutes - 20.7 MB

EP52 - Dumbo might be a classic, but it’s important to understand the history behind one of its characters, especially when that history encompasses slavery, racism, and discrimination in the United States, starting with blackface at minstrel shows and ending in written laws. Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. www.burstyourbubblepodcast.com www.facebook.com/burstyourbubblepodcast www.twitter.com/burstbubblespod

Renew One Day at a Time

February 28, 2019 10:47 - 34 minutes - 47.2 MB

EP51 - Have you ever watched the show One Day at a Time? The remake of the 1975 sitcom is a present day story of the Cuban American Alvarez family. The remake - brought to life largely in part by Gloria Calderón Kellett, a Cuban American, and a half Latinx writing team - is in danger of not being renewed for its 4th season. Listen as we look at either why you should be watching the show or reminding you exactly why you love it. #RenewODAAT Art by Jeremy Ferris. New episodes released th...

That’s Not Romantic - It’s Creepy!

February 14, 2019 08:27 - 47 minutes - 65.3 MB

EP50 - For decades, romantic comedies have given audiences an incorrect idea of how romantic relationships should work. How you should ask someone out, woo them, and win them. But because of how romcoms depict love on screen, they show harmful behaviors like persistence, possessiveness, and stalking as grand gestures of love -  all while normalizing them. The Three Little Pigs and What We Can Learn from History

January 24, 2019 08:01 - 18 minutes - 25.9 MB

EP49 - We can probably all think of examples of stereotypes in pop culture, but what happens when the original content is edited multiple times and years apart, changing the stereotype and erasing what we previously saw and heard. Is that change good or bad, and how does it shape our understanding and knowledge of history? Art by Jeremy Ferris. An Ode to Black Hair, from Locs and Cornrows to Twists and Braids

January 10, 2019 09:39 - 17 minutes - 24.8 MB

EP48 - Recently there was a viral video of Andrew Johnson, a black teen who was told by a white referee that he could either cut his locs or forfeit his wrestling match. Would it have been the same situation if he had been white? Let's talk about hair and what is fashionable for white people can lead to discrimination for blacks. Art by Jeremy Ferris. Modern Family, Sofia Vergara, and the Influence of Carmen Miranda

December 27, 2018 08:01 - 29 minutes - 41 MB

EP47 - The term "spicy Latina" has dominated Latinx representations in pop culture since the 1940s. Today we have Modern Family and Sofia Vergara, where she is a Colombian playing a Colombian. But is Vergara a positive representation of Latinx culture, and furthermore is it fair to ask her to be? Art by Jeremy Ferris. Conversion Therapy in Pop Culture: From Will & Grace to Boy Erased

December 13, 2018 09:23 - 38 minutes - 53 MB

EP46 - Conversion therapy shows up a lot in pop culture, but how is it shown? As a comedy? As a drama? What time period does the story takes place in? Because depending on what the answers are, these representations can be damaging, sending the message that conversion therapy is the problem of a bygone era. Art by Jeremy Ferris. BoJack Horseman, Whitewashing, and Diane Nguyen

November 08, 2018 08:08 - 34 minutes - 47.7 MB

EP44 - BoJack Horseman might be a wonderful show, but it's not without its flaws. Let's talk about why representation is important, how using white actors to voice animated characters of color is still whitewashing, and Diane Nguyen - a Vietnamese American character who is voiced by a white woman. Candyman and the Fear of "Urban Society"

October 25, 2018 07:01 - 30 minutes - 41.5 MB

EP43 - It's another Halloween episode! This time we're going to focus on Candyman, a 1992 film that plays off a white, middle class audience's fear of "urban society": their fears urban housing projects and the residents living there, all fueled by underlying racism and anti-miscegenation. Harry Belafonte Frames 1968

September 27, 2018 08:23 - 21 minutes - 30.3 MB

EP41 - For one week in 1968, singer and activist Harry Belafonte guest hosted the Tonight Show for Johnny Carson. Belafonte and his guests talked about the Vietnam War, poverty, native rights, race, and interracial relationships, making his one week stint an encapsulating lesson of the turbulent year that was 1968. Orange is the New Black

September 13, 2018 08:10 - 30 minutes - 41.7 MB

EP40 - I have a love/hate relationship with Orange is the New Black. While you could argue that the show has a diverse cast of characters bringing representations to media, it's also easy for those characters to also turn into "token" characters, especially when it comes to Sophia Burset. The (Supremacist) Wizard of Oz

August 23, 2018 07:01 - 22 minutes - 30.4 MB

EP39 - First published as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has turned into a cultural phenomenon, from plays and musicals to movies, most notably as the 1939 film starring July Garland. But scratch the surface of it's creator, and you'll learn that L. Frank Baum was nothing more than a white supremacist who called for the genocide of all Native people. Art by Jeremy Ferris. Firefly and East Asian Representation (or Lack Thereof)

July 26, 2018 04:01 - 25 minutes - 35.2 MB

EP38 - Although it was only on TV for less than a full season, Firefly has become a cult classic. And while I'll admit that I'm a fan of the show, there's on big problem: although Firefly is inspired by East Asian culture, there aren't any East Asian actors. Art by Jeremy Ferris. Scarface and the Mariel Boatlift

June 28, 2018 04:01 - 22 minutes - 31.4 MB

EP36 - Whether you have or haven't seen the 1983 film Scarface, you'll agree it has its place in pop culture. It's referenced in film, TV, and music; you might know lines from the movie ("Say hello to my little friend!"), and may have seen the infamous movie poster on a college dorm wall or two. But let's talk about how the film, which premiered only three years after the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, showed all Cuban political refugees as criminals. Art by Jeremy Ferris. What do representations of race and gender presentation mean on a show when so closely linked to a woman who sends out racist and transphobic tweets? Can we separate the art from the artist?
