Daemon returns to Runestone and murders his estranged wife, Rhea. King Viserys and Rhaenyra travel to the Driftmark to arrange the marriage between the princess and Ser Laenor to Lord Coryls Velaryon's satisfaction regarding the succession. Rhaenyra privately tells Laenor that she understands his sexual preference and proposes that they perform their royal duties together while having lovers. Ser Otto, about to depart King's Landing, tells Queen Alicent her son must be named as heir, otherwise her children's lives will threatened if Rhaenyra takes the throne. Also, Alicent unintentionally learns the truth about Rhaenyra and Ser Criston, but keeps it confidential. At a feast celebrating the forthcoming nuptials, Alicent enters the hall wearing a green gown, the color symbolizing the Hightower House's call to war. Ser Gerold Royce confronts Daemon, claiming he murdered his cousin Rhea, which Daemon denies, stating he expects to inherit his late wife's wealth. Laenor's lover, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth, realizing that Ser Criston is Rhaenyra's lover, smugly suggests they guard each other's secrets. Criston, enraged, fatally beats Joffrey. Laenor is openly devastated by Joffrey's death. To avert additional scandal, Rhaenyra and Laenor are quickly and privately married. Later, as Ser Criston is about to kill himself over his misdeed, Queen Alicent appears, halting his suicide.
