The music of Maneka - the sonically-eclectic project of guitarist Devin McKnight, also of the band Speedy Ortiz - draws on a multitude of influences in an attempt to reflect McKnight’s unique cultural perspective as a person of color in an overwhelmingly white-dominated music scene. With rejection of any thoughts of genre pigeonholing - though post-punk might be the broadest that usually applies one way or another - Maneka swerves from sound to sound and emotion to emotion in an impressive blend of creative songwriting. The band stopped by Serious Business Music in Brooklyn to show us how it all comes together.
