ExcerScience With Laura Leiva

This week Dr. Porter has a conversation with Founder and CEO of the ExerScience Center, Dr. Laura
Leiva. Dr. Leiva’s love of movement started as a young child and she credits her athleticism to her father
who was an athlete in Romania. She began ice skating at the age of three and competed until she was
13.
After being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis, she lost her ability to be
competitive and became discouraged with the turn her life had taken. That’s when she gained her
spiritual side. She enjoyed drumming circles, Reiki, singing bowls, meditation and more and found a
balance between her physical side and her spiritual side.
She graduated from NOVA Southeastern University with a double major in Biomedical Physical and
Biomedical Sciences but her career was sidetracked due to medical conditions that put her on bed rest
for four years. Her son also required physical therapy and she saw firsthand how helpful those therapies
were for him. She wanted to impact people’s lives in a positive way and fell in love with physical
therapy practices, eventually completing her PhD in Physical Therapy.
