On Monday evening (March 11th), year two of the three-year Kennedy Expressway rehabilitation project is scheduled to begin. The reversible express lanes will close overnight Monday into Tuesday and will not reopen until late fall. The left local lane will also be closed in both directions at the Junction. Additionally, long-term Local Lane closures will take effect in both directions in the Downtown area. Inbound, the left lane will be closed from Chicago Ave to Lake St; Outbound, the left lane will be closed from the Jane Byrne Interchange into the Hubbard St Tunnel, and the entrance ramp from Randolph St will close, all until late fall. Expect these closures to not only have a major impact on the Kennedy Expressway, but also on the inbound Edens, the Eisenhower as drivers use it to detour, and on the inbound Dan Ryan, with drivers losing a lane Downtown at the Byrne. Drivers can expect additional lane and ramp closures during overnights and weekends for the duration of the project. The Illinois Department of Transportation recommends commuters use public transit as an alternative whenever possible.
