A bit over one hundred years after the Irish Easter Rising, author Colm Toibin recounts the slow movements for independence that peaked in the rebellion in Dublin in 1916.

It was the first armed action of the Irish revolutionary period. The British army suppressed the rebellion. But the high number of civilian casualties and the severe punishment of the Irish leaders let to increased support for Irish independence.
