The State Government has put the responsibility for compulsory lifejackets for rock fishers in the hands of NSW Coastal Councils. Member for Swansea, Yasmin Catley, has described the decision to make local government responsible for opting in or out of this lifesaving legislation as a 'joke' and an exercise in cost shifting but she will be pushing the local Councils in her electorate to come onboard with the State Governments proposal. The electorate of Swansea takes in the deadliest stretch of coastline for rock fishing in NSW with a three-kilometre stretch around Snapper Point claiming 17 lives since 2008.
