In the latest installment of Laz's Rikers Stories, he details how his aunt got him a paid lawyer for a murder case. This was Laz's first time incarcerated, and despite Laz not knowing what it was they requested he be put it in protective custody. At first the young Laz felt a sense of relief, which quickly changed. They actually called it "The Body Shop" because most inmates had high rofile murder cases. Their notoriety forced them to be incarcerated separately.
Laz found it to be anything but safe. On his first night he was robbed by 5 inmates with box-cutters for his sneakers, which he later got back. The rest of the story is about his time in there.
Rikers Island is a 413.17-acre island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx that is home to New York City's main jail complex. The facility is notoriously violent, and oftentimes the tensions are unavoidable.
