Tucson artist Ted DeGrazia (1909-1982) fell under the spell of the Superstition Mountains of central Arizona. From the late 1940’s to the late 1970’s he was a frequent visitor to the mysterious mountain range, exploring the backcountry on horseback and prospecting for gold. The legends, history, natural beauty, and native cultures of the Superstitions fascinated the artist and inspired essays, drawings, and paintings for his 1972 book “DeGrazia and his Mountain – The Superstition.”
This episode of Big Blend Radio’s Toast to the Arts Show features Lance Laber, Executive Director of the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun. Lance discusses the life of artist Ted DeGrazia and the new exhibit “DeGrazia’s Superstition Mountain Collection” on display from July 6, 2021- January 26, 2022. DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun is 10-acre historic landmark nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. Opened in 1965, it is home to over 15,000 originals of Ted DeGrazia art pieces including oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics and sculptures. There are six permanent collections on display and several rotating exhibitions each year. More at https://degrazia.org/
