Does the necessity of Baptism imply salvation by works?

This is really a serious discussion. It has to do with immortality and where one will spend eternity. Therefore it is dangerous to simply follow the teaching of men who try to play down what the scriptures teach, and simply make bold statements that baptism is a work without letting the scriptures to define the term.
