Bob Metcalfe invented Ethernet in 1973 while working at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto, California. Over the decades to follow, Metcalfe became an internet pioneer by commercializing Ethernet as the local area network (LAN) standard of the internet. In 2011, Metcalfe and his wife, Robyn, moved to Austin where they both became professors at The University of Texas at Austin. Metcalfe served as Professor of Innovation in the Cockrell School of Engineering for ten years before retiring from UT Austin in December of 2021. Along the way, Dr. Metcalfe has helped countless campus and local Austin organizations help make Austin a better Silicon Valley.
