In this episode, we talk about a few of the common tropes that can be found in the books we read.
What is a trope? A literary trope is the use of figurative language, via word, phrase, or image, for artistic effect such as using a figure of speech. The word trope has also come to be used for describing commonly recurring literary and rhetorical devices, motifs, or clichés in creative works.
Examples of tropes are endless so we chose to only talk about:
1. Off-Limits Romance
2. Love Triangles
3. The Secret Heir (or The Secret Hair)
4. The Chosen One
5. The Mentor
6. Token Diversity
5. Gruff Old Character Whose Life is Changed by a Precocious Child
6. Bad Communication Kills

And here is a link to the video by Tiffany Russell called "But, I'm the Chosen One. What's Wrong With the Chosen One Trope?" that Shanna references.
Update: FYI There IS an audio version of Carmen Maria Machado's In The Dream House. We haven't given it a listen yet, but when we do, we will let you know how it goes.
