In 1991 Nintendo granted husband-and-wife directors Rocky Morton and Annabelle Jankel the rights to their Super Mario Bros. franchise to create a family adventure film. Already a household name, Mario was poised to join the pantheon of cinema’s greatest heroes. But Super Mario Bros. suffered from a notoriously chaotic production and the film has since been disavowed by almost all performers and crew members associated with it. But does the Super Mario Bros. adaptation have more merit than the record suggests?
