1. Hebrews 12-14 -NKJV-- 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord-- This text is used by far too many preachers and people to condition salvation in some way on the believer. --2. Mostly, it is read to say-the Holy Spirit is speaking of moral and behavior modification or -ongoing sanctification- however they define it-as what will FINALLY cause a believer to see God. Fundamentally, the understanding is reduced to Dos and Don'ts for one to see the LORD.--3. But is that what the text is actually teaching, especially in the light of all that the Holy Spirit has expounded about Christ from Hebrews 1 to chapter 11- --4. The reason why people find works righteousness in the text is because they do not understand or believe the gospel and secondly because they are defining holiness in terms that are not in keeping with the flow of the Hebrews writer's arguments on salvation.--5. If the writer means the things that you do are the HOLINESS that will cause you to see the LORD, then He would have essentially denied the gospel. So, the Holiness in view has to be something different than what many think it to be. And guess what- It is defined for us in the text. --6. We talked about the Law and salvation. This matter is very important to understand and make proper distinctions. Many are deceived by their sin and think that the Law is for them to do. --7. And so, we visited the conversation between the Lawyer -Liar- and Jesus in Luke 10 and talked about what Jesus expounded on the matter of the Law and how salvation actually happens.--8. The Parable of the Good Samaritan is taught and believed by many as a moralistic teaching but it is not.
