It’s sort of amazing how positive things will converge at random times. The entire guest roster for this season makes us all warm and fuzzy inside, but once in a while, a very special guest will say yes to partake in our shenanigans.

Truthfully, we admire every single person we invite to join us here, but certain guests transcend mere admiration. They’ve been with us since our childhoods. Their work is part of our respective DNA. In layman’s terms, they’re fucking heroes.

One such person is the mastermind behind the Commander Keen series, Rise of the Triad, Anachronox, and the ever-present Dopefish: Tom Hall.

“Damn, the British one just won’t stop yammering…”

Tom appreciates good video game storytelling. In fact, several of his career milestones are notable for featuring some pretty good storytelling in genres where you would usually expect that quality to be foregone.

That was our impetus for doing an episode with him, so that was the subject. If you forget it during the conversation, don’t worry; you’ll be reminded several times!

He was also the author of the legendary DOOM Bible, meticulously crafting the world Doomguy was to redecorate with demon guts, as well as the architect behind the shared id software universe, in which wiz kid Billy Blaze is the grandson of legendary Nazi alt-right ass kicker William B.J. Blazkowicz, so it was natural to talk a bit about world building as well.

Finally, he appears to appreciate European cheeses, but that’s not a very gouda joke.

“But it says ‘adventure game podcast’?”

Talking to Tom was not dissimilar to talking to John Romero in that we were fairly starstruck, and tried to let the man talk whenever we could.

We like to think the end result should be fairly rewarding to listen to, so humour us by doing so either on YouTube:

Or below this post. Thanks to Tom for joining us, and thanks to my co-hosts for continuing to make show one of the best damn things in my life right now. I’ll be blasting off in my Beans-with-Bacon Megarocket for now, but we’ll be back with yet another amazing guest next week!
