This week, Shannon Fisher welcomes Angela Peabody, President and Founder of the Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to eradicate gender based violence and empower women and girls worldwide through education.

Female Genital Mutilation is internationally recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. An estimated 230,000 women and girls are at risk for female genital mutilation in the U.S. annually. Around the world, 8000 girls are victims of FGM daily. Up to 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM.

Female genital mutilation has been illegal in the United States since 1996, and transporting girls out of the U.S. for FGM is now punishable by five years in jail, but the procedure is still performed in private, and it has gone largely underground.
