It was Thanksgiving night, 2014, at our wellness retreat center and vacation home, in the low country of South Carolina. I was standing, washing dishes, and looking out the kitchen window after a wonderful seven course meal, when I began to feel excruciating pain.

This pain was in my lower back, and it radiated below my knees, and down to the calves and ankles of both my legs. This was not only shocking and surprising, but somewhat embarrassing because we had guests for the holiday weekend and I knew I would not be able to fully engage with them.

I finally had to reveal the painful new discovery to my guests, who concluded that it must be sciatica. They readily gave me exercises, similar to yoga postures, to help relieve the pressure. Needless to say, I found little relief. However, I continued with the suggested exercises, in addition to my usual workouts and stretches for months, but to no avail.

I didn’t know what I was going to do. With the many months that had passed, I felt impatient, knowing I couldn’t spend the rest of my life not being able to walk or stand in comfort....
