Lingashtakam is a very popular song about God Shiva that explains the importance of worshipping the Shiva Linga. It is called Lingashtakam because it is an Ashtakam or eight stanzas. It is not known who composed it. Some say it is Adi Shankaracharya, while others claim that it is Sage Agastya. Lord Shiva is often worshipped as ‘Arupa-rupi’, meaning ‘a form with no form’, that is, the Shiva Lingam. Worshipping the Lingam is said to bring us much closer to Shiva and is also prescribed by the Shivagamas, Puranas, etc. It was one of the ancient practices in Hinduism. Linga worship can be done through Abishekams, rituals, and chanting stotras and ashtakas. One such method is Lingashtakam. It talks of the greatness of Shiva in the Linga form and about many aspects of Lingam. Chanting Lingashtakam pleases Shiva and helps you gain his blessings.
