Our friend Ben Stark’s new short film “Dead Saturday” stars Oscar-nominee Eric Roberts (“Inherent Vice,” “The Dark Knight,” “Runaway Train”) as Pastor Malcolm and Kurt Krause (“True Detective”) as troubled youth Jimmy, who interprets a loophole in the Bible as a free pass to sin without consequence on the Saturday before Easter.

Acclaimed young Shoals-area band The Bear contributed an original score. The film will screen at Druid City Brewing Company in Tuscaloosa on July 11 at 6 p.m. A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow, with another screening of the movie right after.

After a series of statewide screenings, the filmmakers will then take the film to as many regional film festivals as they can manage, including this year’s Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, so stay tuned for programming information.

Ben talked to Stark about the themes and ideas explored in this film, why the short format suited this project, how to find the right people to help make it and how he plans to get more eyes on the movie moving forward.
