German developmental psychologists like Friedrich Fröbel came up with the idea of a recreational area as a developmental tool that instills children with a sense of fair play and good manners. in 1859 The first public-access recreational area is opened in Manchester, England. in 1922 a man named Charles Wicksteed invented the slide... and today's playgrounds kids land on soft surfaces and no rust.
