Most historians trace the first Labor Day celebration back to 1884, when the Knights of Labor held one of New York’s largest parades to honor the working class. They then passed a resolution vowing to always hold a parade on the first Monday of September.… Labor organizations began lobbying state legislatures to recognize Labor Day as an official state holiday. Colorado was the first to do so, followed by New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. By 1894, Congress had declared it a legal holiday
