goodbye/fun facts....On this date in 1862, the United States issued its first paper money in bills worth $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000....that right...there was no paper money in the u.s before this date! actually there was colonial paper money that was traded for coins...so during the revolutionary war the federal government issued federal paper currency. Then the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued paper U.S. currency in 1862 to make up for the shortage of coins and to finance the Civil War. btw...they stopped producing the $500 bill and the $1000 bill in 1969
