One of history's deadliest diseases, smallpox is estimated to have killed more than 300 million people since 1900. In May 1901, an outbreak of smallpox emerged, followed by a series of outbreaks in various neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. In an attempt to take control of the epidemic, the Boston Board of Health mandated vaccinations. Persons who refused vaccination were subject to a $5 fine or a 15-day jail sentence?
